ABOUT REIKI

Karen performing Reiki at Relay for Life in Peabody

Reiki, pronounced RAY-KEY, is an ancient Japanese healing therapy that reduces stress and promotes the body's natural ability to heal itself from minor aches and pains as well as disease, working on all levels of the body, mind and spirit.

The word “Reiki” translates to “universal life force energy”. Healing energy is transmitted through the practitioner's hands while placed on or above various parts of the body, fully clothed. Clients often experience warmth, deep relaxation and other pleasant sensations while the energy is guided to areas in the body where it is most needed. With Reiki, you reach a relaxed state while your body begins to heal itself during and after the session in subtle ways.

Your body is much like your car, with the same needs for a tune-up, like your car’s battery. Reiki provides a powerful source of renewed energy, rejuvenating and balancing your health, wellness, and quality of life.

We invite you to continue reading for more questions and answers about Reiki.

How does Reiki work?

Healing energy is transmitted through the practitioner’s hands while placed on or above various parts of the body, fully-clothed. The practitioner does not do the healing, but acts only as a conduit for the universal energy. The recipient is the one who is doing the healing.

Back to Questions

Is Reiki a form of massage?

No. Reiki does not manipulate or apply pressure to the body in any way. To the contrary, the practitioner gently places his or her hands on or above parts of the body – the head, chest, shoulders, joints, abdomen, legs, feet and back. You are always fully clothed during a Reiki session as opposed to a massage. You can choose to lie down on a massage table, which is more relaxing. If this is not possible, you can sit in a very comfortable chair.

How did Reiki originate and how is it practiced today?

Reiki was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan in the late 1800s, with origins from Buddhist Qigong. Before his death, Dr. Usui bestowed upon Dr. Chujiro Hayashi the title of Reiki Grand Master to lead all the other Reiki teachers. In 1936, Hayashi brought Reiki to Hawaii and prior to his death in 1941, Mrs. Hawayo Takata became Reiki Grand Master. Mrs. Takata was credited in initiating 22 Reiki Masters and willed the Grand Master title to her granddaughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto before her death in 1980.

Reiki is now practiced by thousands of Reiki practitioners worldwide. Reiki is conducted in a variety of medical settings for pre- and post-surgery, AIDS, cancer and chemotherapy, alcohol recovery, arthritis, asthma, migraines, menopause, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, depression and also in hospices.

Back to Questions

What should I do during a Reiki session? What can I expect?

Just relax and close your eyes. Try to surrender and not worry about anything. Sometimes, people are a little tense or nervous during their first session and really start to experience the peace and relaxation during their second Reiki session.

Although everyone has a unique experience, people very often experience warmth, peace, deep relaxation and other pleasant sensations while the energy is guided to areas in the body where it is most needed. You may feel heat or tingling in areas where you have ailments or pain. You may feel relief from ailments or pain during or immediately following a session, or more subtly in the days or weeks that follow. You may feel the energy moving or you may feel nothing at all. Regardless, you are receiving the flow of energy and getting benefits.

Back to Questions

Will I experience emotions during Reiki?

If you have deep emotional issues in your life, you may weep during or after a Reiki session. Reiki tends to bring suppressed issues to the surface so they can be released. With any emotional issues, it is recommended that you seek help from a licensed medical professional.

Back to Questions

Will Reiki interfere with prescribed medications?

Reiki accelerates your body’s natural ability to heal itself. Therefore, if you currently take medications such as those prescribed for diabetes or other diseases or conditions, you may require less medication once beginning Reiki. It is important to be monitored closely by your physician with regards to any change in your medication requirements.

Back to Questions

Do I have to believe in Reiki for it to work?

No. You will receive benefits regardless of whether you are a believer.
