Beagle’s Cushing’s Disease
In 1998, we adopted a dog found on the streets of Puerto Rico. She had found her way to us via a program developed to take strays from the streets, where most vacationers report the overwhelming population of neglected dogs. Senora Sally is a Beagle-Terrier mix who has brought lots of love to our home.
At the age of eleven, Sally developed Cushing’s Disease, an endocrine disorder, which causes the body to overproduce steroids, as well as severe attacks of pancreatitis and cholangeal hepatitis. My greatest fear was that we would have to put Sally to sleep. In the midst of her veterinary workup, we sought the assistance of distance Reiki from Karen Majalian, in hopes that it would bring Sally out of the woods.
Karen asked for a photograph of Sally to help her focus while she gave her a late night Reiki session. We noticed Sally sleeping very peacefully that night and she seemed chipper the following morning. When we came home from work later that day, she even greeted us at the door with her favorite teddy bear in her mouth, which she had not done in some time.
When we took Sally to the veterinarian the next day, the lab work indicated that her that her platelets returned to normal levels, which indicated that there was no internal bleeding. This was great news! In addition, there were no tumors on her ultrasound. After the Reiki session, it seems that Sally’s test results matched her positive change in behavior.
Karen also shared some very helpful, intuitive thoughts with us, namely that Sally was feeling as though we didn’t love her anymore. We then realized that Sally’s medical treatment called for her to be on a very bland diet and we weren’t feeding her as much. Given her history of being a stray on the streets of Puerto Rico, it’s understandable that she would feel unloved due to lack of food. Thanks to Karen, we make it a point to reassure Sally that we love her at every opportunity while she undergoes treatment for Cushing’s.
